Easing the work-at-height headaches

Eazi Access’ partnerships with some of the renowned global access equipment suppliers, such as JLG, ensures that its fleet is always at the forefront of technological developments.

Eazi Access, Africa’s market leader in the rental of work-at-height and material handling solutions, has a strict commitment to safety based on the understanding that safety is a key parameter for equipment that operates at height, and even more so when the machinery is responsible for the movement of personnel, writes Munesu Shoko.

In an environment where 190 per 100 000 workers slip or trip, and falls between 48 and 77 per 100 000 workers are recorded globally per year when working-at-height, there is no denying that safety measures should take priority whenever people are working-at-height. Injuries of this nature also have a fair share of productivity headaches, with the Labour Force Survey in the UK estimating that slips, trips and falls at height had a combined estimated 1,5 million working hours lost between 2012 and 2013 alone, for example.  

Most of these injuries are recorded when personnel use conventional work-at-height solutions such as scaffolding, ladders, steps, mobile scaffolds, aluminium towers and podiums. On the back of these work-at-height problems, suppliers of newer solutions are driven by the desire to safeguard employees and businesses in the workplace, and that is one of Eazi Access’ core values. Extensive fleet 

Eazi Access was founded in 2003 with a vision to make working-at-height safer and more efficient. The company provides its products and services to several sectors, including mining, light industrial, heavy industrial, entertainment and construction industries.

The company’s partnerships with some of the renowned global equipment suppliers, such as JLG and Power Towers, ensures that its fleet is always at the forefront of technological developments and its application solutions are consistently world class.

Its JLG fleet is very extensive. The Articulated Diesel Booms range starts from the JLG 340AJ, which comes with a 12,33 m working height, to the JLG 1250AJP, with a 40,3 m working height.

“Our Telescopic Diesel Booms range from the JLG 400S with a 14,29 m working height, all the way to the JLG 1850SJ with a whopping 58,56 m working height,” says Jean du Randt, Chief Strategy Officer at Eazi Access. This is complemented by an electric boom range that starts from a 10,97 m working height in the form of the JLG E300AJP, to the JLG M600JP with a 20,39 m working height.

Its Compact Crawler line, better known as Spider Lifts, ranges from the JLG X14J, which comes with a 13,8 m working height, to the JLG X23J with a 23,1 m maximum working height. The Mast Boom Lift range starts from a 5,66 m working height provided by the JLG 1230ES, and ends with the JLG Toucan 12E with its 11,83 m working height.

For low-level access applications, the Push Around and Self-Propelled Vertical Lift range starts with the JLG Liftpod with its 4,32 m working height, going all the way to the JLG 30AM with a working height of 11,14 m. Stock Pickers range from a working height of 6,6 m (JLG 15MSP) to 7,96 m (JLG 20MSP).

Elsewhere, the Diesel Scissor Lift range starts with the JLG 260MRT with its 9,92 m working height, going all the way to the JLG 245-25 with a working height of 26,5 m. The Electric Scissor Lift offers working heights between 7,72 m (JLG 1930ES) and 14,19 m (JLG 4069LE/M4069).

The Power Towers range, ideal for low-level access applications, starts from a working height of 4,2 m (Ecolift) to 4,5 m (Nano SP).

To ensure that workers are safe when working-at-height, this range of equipment comes with some key standard safety features. “All our machines come standard with audible location signalling and emergency safety switches,” says Du Randt, adding that some of the JLG Scissor Lifts and Trailer-Mounted Booms come equipped with interlocking outriggers, ensuring that the machine footprint is increased and pressure is thus more spread out.

“Our machines also come clearly marked to show the direction of travel,” says Pope. “All controls have a ‘dead-man function’ that automatically stops or returns to neutral when released.”

All machines are also provided with a service manual that ensures full safety checks are done before operation. By implementing the correct safety procedures, injuries can be avoided.

Operational efficiency of any machine is maximised through the service and maintenance provided. “Our machines are put through stringent and continuous maintenance and safety inspection programmes by our qualified technicians, ensuring our customers are supplied with safe, reliable machines,” says Pope.

Eazi believes in doing more than the prescribed service and maintenance, as well as inspections on all machines on a continuous basis. “We are cognisant of the user’s experience with the unit and believe in safety as a critical factor as part of our customer service offering,” says Du Randt.

“All our machines are built to either the CE standard (European) or the ANSI standard (American). Both these standards comply with the ISO standard (International),” says Pope. In South Africa, the SABS has accepted the ISO standard as the required standard for machines to be built to and thus these machines adhere to the local standards.

Eazi is also participating member of SANS Technical Committee TC214, adopting the ISO standards for MEWP Design, Maintenance & Operation. The company’s load tests are performed in accordance with DMR 18.5 and 18.6 by using a registered LMI who works for a registered LME.

Training is key

Lack of instructions – in an understandable form – is a key reason equipment is misused or not used at all. In this instance, proper training is a key requirement.

Dedicated focus on and investment in the development of its people and customers has led to Uplift Quality Solutions, an Eazi Access group company, becoming a fully-certified training centre.

Uplift Quality Solutions is an accredited training provider with TETA and ETDP Setas. Its training material is also approved with these Setas and adheres to the SAQA Unit Standards.
